Oak Island Cemetery

This cemetery is near the county line separating Freestone and Limestone counties. Named "Oak Island" for a grove of beautiful huge old oak trees that stand on a hill top in lovely rolling countryside. Many of its old stones are broken or obscured by trees.

Status: Inactive, but still well kept by descendants.

Background:
The Oak Island church was organized Sept 11, 1848 by five charter members: Mrs. Mary Archibald, Samuel K. Archibald, Thos. W. Archibald, Eloisa Patton, and Mrs. Mary S. Patton, whose husband, William Patton, donated land for the Presbyterian church and adjoining cemetery. The Rev. John Limber was the first pastor. The church was located in Limestone County, and later was in Freestone County when they formed the county in 1850. This is believed to be the oldest church in Freestone County.

By 1873, the church had 102 members and 88 children in Sunday School, but the congregation declined after the railroad came through Mexia in the 1870's as many moved to Mexia. In 1899, the church was discontinued.

Many of the area's early pioneers are buried in the church cemetery.

Historical marker was dedicated in 1972.
