Foy M. Hunter, caretaker for the burial ground of his ancestors, has worked hard and been rewarded with Hunter Cemetery having been designated as a Texas Historic Cemetery.

The Historical Plaque Reads: HUNTER CEMETERY

DR. JAMES M. HUNTER (1819-1895), A PHYSICIAN, AND HIS WIFE SARAH M. (1822-1886) BROUGHT THEIR FAMILY TO TEXAS FROM SOUTH CAROLINA IN THE EARLY 1880's. THEY PURCHASED 400 ACRES OF FARMLAND FROM THE ESTATE OF DR. J.N. ALLISON IN 1885 AND FAMILY MEMBERS OCCUPIED IT UNTIL 1909. THE EARLIEST BURIAL HERE IS THAT OF THEIR INFANT GRANDSON, WILLIE B., WHOSE DEATH IN 1885 MARKS THE CEMETERY'S BEGINNING. IN 1911 IT WAS FORMALLY DEEDED AS A BURIAL GROUND BY THE DOCTOR'S GRANDSON JAMES M. HUNTER (1883-1964). PIPE MARKERS SET AT THAT TIME STILL MARK THIS CEMETERY THAT READS AS A
CHRONICLE OF THE HUNTER FAMILY AND THE GENERATIONS OF THEIR DESCENDANTS.

Longview Morning Journal Article

This cemetery is located in Longview, Gregg Co., Texas, off of Gilmer Rd on Dundee Rd. about 2/10 of a mile or less on the left, in a stand of pine trees off the side of the road. The cemetery looks to be cared for, and has had a recent burial. It is fenced in, with an arch over the gate that reads Hunter Cemetery. On the left, just inside the gate is a headstone that also reads Hunter Cemetery. The graves are to the back, about 15 feet, with no evidence of any burials in the front of the cemetery. There are three rows of graves, all covered with marble slabs. The headstones are all in very good condition, and very legible.

This private cemetery is located across the road from the Dundee Angus Ranch Home, Texas Historical Landmark.  Dr. James M. Hunter & family owned the ranch home and 400 acres of farmland from 1885 - 1909; thus, the Hunter Cemetery evolved.  Most of the family members, who migrated from South Carolina in the early 1880?s, settled and are buried here.  The cemetery?s first burial was in 1885.  The latest burial was in 1999.  There are 16 gravesites including 4 generations of fathers/sons who lived in this area ? Dr. James M. Hunter (physician), Waterman M. Hunter (son and farmer), James M. Hunter (grandson and farmer), Madison W. Hunter (g.grandson).  In 1911, the cemetery was sectioned off from the farm and officially deeded by James M. Hunter, grandson.

Foy M. Hunter, gggrandson.
