Masonic Lodge No 852 A F & A M
1901-1941
Gladewater, Tx

A group of Masons mostly from Longview, met Apr 25, 1901 to begin work on a Masonic Lodge in Gladewater. E E Moses of Longview acted as Master and set the lodge to work.

Charter was issued Dec 5, 1901 and constituted on Feb 27, 1902.

The first officers were:
Daniel Washington (Watt) Wood ---- Worshipful Master
Reuben Ambrose Hendrix ----- Senior Warden
Sam Jordan ---- Junior Warden
O J (Oliver) Bruce ----- Senior Deacon
E E Martin ---- Junior Deacon
J A Ponder ----- Secretary
A M Phillips ----- Treasurer
A S Poindexter ----- Chaplin
E B Daniels ----- Tiler

Most of the lodge records were lost in a fire in Sept 1928. The lodge was then located in the Ponder building located on the corner of Main and Pacific. This buiding was divided and also served as the meeting place of the town band, Knights of Pythias, and for a short time also housed the local chapter of the Klu Klux Klan.

The 1930's saw the lodge referred to as the Humble Loadge as several members worked for the Humble Oil Company and had come from Eureka. These men were responsible for keeping the lodge together during that time. LeRoy Decker and Luther B Kendall were two of these men.
