Comments: John Magrill came to Upshur County around 1846 with his brother Samuel D. Magrill. He acquired quite a bit of land and deeded a portion of it to the Negroes of Upshur County (now known as Magrill Plaza). He also deeded property for the erection of a Methodist Church in the present city of Longview. John was appointed Confederate Postmaster of
Earpville (now Longview) on 24 Jan 1862. He served as a courier in the Confederate States Army. In 1872 he sold land in what was later known as Longview Junction to the IGN Railroad. This became part of the City of Longview, and Magrill Street was named for him. In the 1800's John was a dealer in groceries and provisions with his son-in-law Wiliam T. Whitelock. The Magrills, Whitelocks and Stansburys lived in San Marcos, Hays County, Texas in 1880, but all returned to the Longview area.
