Mattox, Velma Irene Moore Services for Velma Irene Moore Mattox, 73, of Longview, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, August 18, 2007, at the Welch Funeral Home Chapel, 4619 Judson Road, with Dr. Tenpenny and the Rev. Bob White officiating. Burial will be in Judson Cemetery, on Hwy. 1844, north of Longview. Velma died Wednesday, August 15, 2007, at a local hospital, after a lengthy illness. Velma was born February 4, 1934, in Upshur County, to Raymond Edward Moore and Zetta Jewel Woodard Moore. She attended Longview schools, graduating from Longview High School in 1950, and graduated with a business administration degree from Bish-Mathis Institute. Velma married James Carroll Mattox on February 2, 1952, in Texarkana, Miller County, Arkansas. She began working at an early age with Perry Brothers in Longview. After graduating from BMI, she worked for Dr. Roberts as a doctor's assistant and receptionist. She also worked for Heritage Tool and Supply. She was a longtime member of Macedonia Baptist Church, where she worked as the pastor's secretary and financial secretary for 18 1½2 years, before retirement in 1997. During her marriage, she and her husband traveled to almost every state in the United States, throughout Canada and Nova Scotia. Spending time with their children and grandson, traveling and camping were their passions. She was preceded in death by her parents, Raymond and Jewel Moore; her husband of 47 1/2 years, James C. Mattox; her grandparents, Charlie and Beta Woodard, and John and Bertha Moore; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Velma is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Scott Anderson; one grandson, Shane Edward Anderson; one son and daughter-in-law, James E. "Jay" and Dorrie Mattox; step-grandchildren, Jeremy Randall, Christine Randall, Jeff Randall and Aaron Randall; one sister and brother-in-law, Kay and Woodie Martin; one sister-in-law and husband, Betty and Aubrey Jones; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and many special friends. Memorial contributions may be made to Macedonia Baptist Church, 4656 Page Rd., Longview, TX 75605. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. this evening, August 17, 2007, at the funeral home.
