Owles, H.F. Funeral services for H.F. "Harry" Owles, of Longview, will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, February 5, 2007, at the chapel of Rader Funeral Home of Longview, with Pastor Brad Nelson of Summerfield United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will follow in Summerfield Cemetery on Tryon Road. Mr. Owles passed away on Thursday, February 1, 2007, following a lengthy illness. Born December 24, 1919, in Toronto, Canada, Harry was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers; two sisters; and wife, Joanne. Harry and Joanne were married for more than 60 years, having lived in Longview since 1946. Harry attempted to enlist in the U.S. Army in 1943, and it was at this time that he learned that he was not an official U.S. citizen, due to his premature birth in Canada. After some hasty paperwork, the U.S. Army was glad to have him, and he served overseas for three years in England, France, Belgium and Germany. After his honorable discharge, Harry and Joanne were marrried in 1946, and moved to Longview. One of his favorite sayings was that he was not born in Texas, but got her as quick as he could. One of Harry's first jobs in Longview was as a mechanic for McMaster's Motors, a Studebaker dealership on Tyler Street years ago. He continued his work career at Marlow Pump Co., Farmer Brown Furniture Store, Baird Furniture, and Fedway Department Store. Harry became an agent for the Equitable Life Assurance Society in 1963, and took great pride and pleasure in serving his friends and clients until his retirement. Two of Harry's favorite activities were fishing and reading his Bible. Harry was an active member of Summerfield Methodist Church, where he served on the board of trustees, finance committee, and Methodist Men's Group, where he was an avid "42" player on game nights. Harry also served on the board of directors of Longview Community Ministries' Food Box Committee. Survivors include his sons, H.F. "Buddy" Owles Jr. and wife, Ann, of Longview, and Roger Owles of Longmont, Colorado; four grandsons, Eric Owles of Brooklyn, N.Y., Greg Owles and wife, Katie, of Tucson, Ariz., Ray Owles and wife, LaDona, of Houston and Jeff Owles and wife, Melissa of Hempstead; three granddaughters, Lynn Ojeda and husband, Homero, of Plano, Liz Ronning and husband, John, of White Oak and Rebecca Howell and husband, Lonnie of Hallsville; nine great-grandchildren, with another due very soon; one niece; and nine nephews. Those wishing to make memorial donations may consider Longview Community Ministries' Food Box, Highway 80 Rescue Mission, Summerfield Cemetery Association, or the Gregg County Humane Society. Visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, February 4, 2007, at Rader Funeral Home Chapel of Longview. A memorial guestbook may be signed at www.raderfh.com.
