Old log jail constructed
many years ago and was once featured in Ripley's Believe
It or Not. Two names are on the photo in the bottom right
hand corner: Brown & Gray. Are these the two fellows
by the stairs? |

Per the 1873-1973 Gladewater Centennial book: "Down in the south part of town, we put the jail in a log cabin Mr. B. F. Phillips let us use. A big chain was run down the center of the building, and when a fellow came in with too much juice or if he had shoplifted something, they would put a trace chain around him and padlock him to the main chain. That was known as the "trot line." This was Gladewater's jail for the first seven or eight months after the boom. The county jail in Longview was full, so we kinda took care of our own. The city judge was very lenient, and let them work out their fines. Sometimes a collection was taken up for one of the prisoners. The fines were usually $10 or $11." Jeff Johnson is leaning on the bannister in the photo and the other man in dark clothes is unknown, but possibly Constable J. G. Shafer. |
