Ash Twins |
This was taken outside the parsonage
of First Baptist, Longview, 108 5th Ave., near the old Markham
Hospital. The boys are the Ash twins, David Lloyd Ash and Hubert
Levi Ash of Longview. They were designated The
Texas Centennial Twins when they were born January 1, 1936.
This picture was probably taken in 1946. (This picture is posted

(3-9-1851 d 1929). They had been in Gregg County since between

Chieftain was a gift from the church while the "new"
sanctuary was under construction. Identifiable,
in addition to Pastor Morris Ford and his wife Lola are, from

Avery, Helen and John Blair, Mabel Birdsong, Lola Scroggins
and W.C. Barrow. Morris Ford was Pastor from 1945-1971. |

of Dr. W. Morris Ford's pastorate at First Baptist Church, Longview.
The church gave them this new '65 Olds 98. With Dr. Ford is his
wife Lola. Also evident in this picture, taken in the small parking
lot beside the main sanctuary, are Walter Hurst (in the crowd
off Dr. Ford's left shoulder) and W. C. Barrow (behind Mrs. Ford's
right shoulder). David Ford, S/o Dr Morris & Lola Ford is

Magrill, John |
John Magrill was born in 1820 in North Carolina. By the mid 1840’s, John and his brother Samuel had acquired quite a bit of land and deeded not only a portion to the Negroes of Upshur County, but also deeded property for the erection of a Methodist Church. On 24 January 1862 John was appointed Confederate Postmaster of Earpville. John sold land in that area that later was known as Longview Junction to the IGN Railroad. John was a grocer with his son in law William T. Whitelock. |

(shortly after picture was take she married Wm. Henry Smelley)
is the waitress on the right with her hands clasped in front of
her. She worked in the dining room of the Longview Hotel (Hotel
Longivew). This hotel changed hands 5 times in a few years, so
it is not clear exactly what the name of the hotel was at that
time, but probably Hotel Longview. |

Judge John Tyson Smith, Sr. was born near Anniston, Alabama and at the age of 9, was brought to Upshur County about 15 miles east of Gilmer. He first married Elladora Keasler and had Volney and Willie. Elladora, Volney and Willie all died by June 1876. In 1883, he married a widow, Mrs. Robert Marion Keasler, nee` Nancy Melvina Skaggs. John served the City of Longview as City Tax Assessor and Justice of the Peace before serving as Judge from 1888 through 1898 and again in 1901 |

Before 1888, the only facility for African-Americans in Longview was a one room, one teacher building located in the north section of town. Sometime in 1888, a four room frame building was erected and by 1908 had become a two story frame building call Colored High School and later North Ward.
Oil brought prosperity and an increase in population to Longview and a new school. Property adjacent to the colored Southside School on Gum Street to build a 14 room brick building was purchased in 1930. Destroyed by fire in 1946, a new school was built and in 1959 was named Mary C. Womack High School in honor of one of the finest black educators in Longview. |

to right: Tom Richardson, W.A. Steward, D. McHaney, Preston Allison,

group of volunteers to leave Longview to fight the big war. |
