Loot Drug Stores and Make Getaway--Dryer Brothers, the Heaviest Hit

Sheriff Nix and his force, working with Celeste officers, are making every effort to apprehend the parties who robbed the two drug stores in Celeste, this county, on Thursday night, January 16, 1919, but so far no arrests have been made.

Dyer Brothers Drug Store and the Wilkes' Drug Store at Celeste were entered sometime between midnight and 2:00 AM on Thursday, and several hundred dollars' worth of diamonds, watches, knives, and other valuables were taken. The motive was purely robbery, as all the drug stock was intact in both stores, so far as has been learned. The total loss has not been estimated, but Dyer Brothers was the heaviest losers.

Among the jewelry taken from the Dryer store were twelve Elgin watches, all the watch chains in stock, twenty Simmons watches, a diamond ring, a pair of diamond ear screws, three ladies' watches, three gentlemen's wrist watches, a diamond bar pin, ten gold knives and chains, about fifteen watch charms, and other less expensive articles. Wilkes lost a Waltham watch, one Reliance watch, nine gentlemen's heavy mounted set rings, and other articles.

If the officers have any clue to who did the work, they are keeping the information to themselves. An investigation was made Friday, but not word was given out. (January 18, 1919, The Greenville Morning Herald)
