Lucretia Atkerson Johnson, 86, of Greenville died suddenly on Wednesday morning, Dec. 13.

A celebration of her life will be at 2:30 p.m. today at Central Christian Church, with Dr. John Tate officiating. She was born Feb. 14, 1920, in Commerce to parents E.D. and Rose Atkerson, and she was the loving sister of the late Ila Atkerson Pool. She attended public school in Commerce and graduated with a master’s degree in education from East Texas State Teacher’s College. Her career in public school teaching spanned 38 years and took her to schools in Graham Chapel, Big Sandy, Hawkins, Longview and Garland from 1941 to 1979.

Although she had no children of her own, she was a second mother to her nieces and a grandmother to her great-nieces and nephew and several special young friends.

She was married to George Franklin Johnson on June 2, 1961, and after her retirement from the Garland Independent School District, she and her husband, George, moved to Greenville where they became active members of Central Christian Church.

Lucretia will be remembered for her strong and generous spirit, her encouraging words, her sweet smile and her love of people, especially children.

She is survived by her nieces, Janeen Bray Cunningham and Janet Bray Trammel, their husbands and their families: Janeen and Glen Cunningham of Greenville, Janet and Mike Trammel of Lucas, Melissa and Gary Woodall of Arlington, Scott, Cheryl, Austin and Lindsay Cunningham of Frisco, Jennifer Steenbergen of Austin and Julie Steenbergen of McKinney.

Pallbearers will include Robert White, Marc Milton, Gerald Hall, Barry Green, Johnny Jackson and Don McBride.
