BIOGRAPHY IN KENDALL COUNTY

AGOLD, HENRY, SR.

Military period in the life of Prussian-born Henry Agold, Sr. (1833-1922) proved his slight 5/7" figure a poor target for Indians and Rebel soldiers alike. Labeled "white devil" by the former and left unscathed by the latter. Indians did once manage to cut a neat swath through his hair with an arrow.
He served with Co. D 5th Cavalry from 1855 until after the Civil War. Born in Braunschweig, and coming to America about 1843, Baltimore Md. became home. He joined the same cavalry unit twice, having returned to Baltimore from duty at Texas frontier forts, including Camp Verde into 1856. He had again joined thne cavalry before the Civil War and was in numerous battles down the east coast area.
From final discharge at Nashville, he returned to this area, purchasing land and acqujiring citizenship papers in Kendall County. He married Thusnelda Walter, daughter of Mrs. Emilie (Schumann) Walter Ranzau.
The couple farmed and reared their family at the location of the present Boerne Lake. Infants buried in family plot on farm were removed to Boerne Cemetery when the lake was created. Their children were : Emilie, who married first, Ferdinand Leesch, and second, Otto Bergmann; Samuel married Lina Minnich; Caroline married Christian Schmidt; Henry married Lina Haag; Fritz married Katy Saur; and Willie married Ella Bergmann. - submitted by Hulda Agold.
