HASENKAMP FAMILY
BOERNE CEMETERY

This cemetery is located in the town of Boerne, Texas in Kendall County.

HERMAN HASENKAMP
and/or HENRY HASENKAMP

There is a listing in the Boerne Cemetery for Hasenkamp, but since there is no first name nor any dates listed, we can only assume that the person buried here is one of the two brothers who signed the Kendall County petition in 1859. Assuming the brother listed here is Herman, information about him follows:
A short article in Gray, Edith; Recollections of Boerne and Kendall County, Familiy Historiesby Fritz Toepperwein tells the following about the brothers: "Herman and Henry Hasenkampe were signers to the Kendall County petition in 1859, whereby Kendall County was created in 1862. They lived in the part of Boerne known today as "The Flat." He [Herman or Henry] was a big hardy German and used oxen to plow within this vicinity. His shouts to his oxen could be heard for miles. He had one ox named "Berry" and many of the old timers said that they often heard him shout, "Come here, Berry!"

Continuing, the article states: "It was Herman that drove out to get Mrs [Henriette] Stephan, to take her to her daughter, Mary, who was fatally burned while working for Dr. D'Albini. The Cibolo was up and Mr. Hasenkampe drove in to the swollen creek. The horses bolted, overturned the little express wagon, and both Mrs Stephan and Mr. Hasenkampe were drowned. The horses tore loose from the wagon and swam out to shore."

Both Herman and Henry Hasenkamp were living in the Kendall County Area in 1859 if they signed the county petition, but only Henry was living when the 1870 Census was taken. Therefore, the accident which killed Herman Hasenkamp and Henriette Stephan occurred between 1859 and 1870. According the family member charts on Ancestry.com, Henrietta died in 1865.
