He descended from a long line of seafaring people. At age sixteen he went to sea in the whale fishing service and was later in the merchant marine. About 1860 he bought an interest in the ship "Indiana" to engage in the New Orleans cotton trade, but the Civil War practically destroyed the trade. On February 3, 1862 he and Miss Elizabeth Loosely of Philadelphia were married. They made a voyage around the world which occupied three years of their lives. In 1877 they came to Texas for their health and purchased a home three miles southeast of Boerne. The place was named "La Lomita" at some time. Here he made a specialty of fine Merino sheep and Jersey cattle. Capt. Hobron invented the roller bearing, the fore-runner of the ball-bearing. The model was made in Boerne and patented in 1888. He also invented a double breast-yoke but sold it to Tempton.
