The State of Texas, County of Leon.
  "Know all men by these presents that we W. I. POWELL and wife Birdie L. POWELL of the County of Leon State of Texas, in consideration of the sum of Three Hundred Dollars, paid by J. N. SHIELDS as follows:  Three Hundred Dollars cash in hand paid the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged, have Granted, Bargained, Sold and Conveyed, and by these presents do  Grant, Bargain, Sell and Convey, unto the said J. N. SHIELDS of the County of Leon in the State of Texas all that certain Lot, Tract or parcel of land described as follows:  One Hundred acres of land more or less a part of the B. F. WHITAKER headright league in Leon County, Texas, and described as follows, to-wit: Out of the N. W. Portion of said headright league, Beginning at a stake in the West line of said league, a post oak for corner, a p[ost] o[ak] bears N. 40 [degrees] E. 7 vrs., Thence N. 52 1/2 [degrees] E. 1068 vrs. a stake, a Black Jack bears N. 29 [degrees] W. 2-4/10 vrs. another bears N. 24 [degrees] E. 13 vrs., Thence S. 34 [degrees] E. 536-1/2 vrs. a stake for corner, a Black Jack bears N. 5 [degrees] W. 4 vrs. another bears S. 19 [degrees] E. 8-1/2 vrs., Thence S. 52-1/2 [degrees] W. 1032 vrs. a stake, a P[ost] O[ak] bears N. 47 [degrees] W. 3/4 vrs., a Black Jack bears S. 36 [degrees] E. 7 vrs., Thence N. 37-1/2 [degrees] W. 536 vrs. to the place of beginning.  Together with all and singular the rights, members, hereditaments an appurtenances to the same belonging or in anywise incident or appertaining.  To have and to hold all and singular the said premises unto the said J. N. SHIELDS his heirs and assigns, forever.  And we hereby bind ourselves, our heirs, executors and administrators, to warrant and Forever Defend, all and singular the said premises unto the said J. N. SHIELDS his heirs and assigns, against every person whomsoever lawfully claiming or to claim the same, or any part thereof.  Witness our hands this 19th Day of October 1901."

"Before me Tom G. NIXON, a notary public of the County of Leon in the State of Texas, on this day personally appeared W. I. POWELL and Birdie L. POWELL known to me to be the persons whose names are subscribed to the foregoing instrument and acknowledged to me that they each Executed the same for the purposes and consideration therein Expressed and the said Birdie L. POWELL, wife of the said W. I. POWELL, having been examined by me privily and apart from her husband and having the same fully explained to her, she, the said Birdie L. POWELL acknowledged such instrument to be her act and deed, and declared that she had willing signed the same for the purposes and consideration therein expressed, and that she did not wish to retract it.
Given under my hand and seal of office, this 19th day of October A. D. 1901."
