Buffalo's own daughter, Rebecca Robinson 24, won the title of 2008 Miss Texas at the Scholarship Pageant held on Saturday July 5, 2008 in Fort Worth. An exhilarated Rebecca received the crown from 2007 Miss Texas Molly Hazlett of Centerville. Both Leon Co. women competed back to back and won as Miss Longview.
"This is a great honor," said Leon Co. Judge Byron Ryder. "All of Leon Co. is very proud"
The fourth run at the Miss Texas title for Rebecca, she earned 4th runner up in 2005. She also won Miss Teen Texas in 2000 while a junior at Buffalo High School. She is the daughter of Robbie & Reda Robinson and granddaughter of Reuben & Vera Barnett of Buffalo and Nell Robinson of Mexia.
Rebecca is a 2007 graduate of Texas A&M University where she received a degree in Spanish. Her pageant platform is Bilingual Education. She plans to use her $10,000 pageant scholarship to study linguistics in graduate school.
One of Rebecca's contest questions was whether building a fence across the Mexican border was a good idea. Rebecca said "no", but suggested that technology and other programs could help remove illegal immigrants.
"It's been a roller coaster ride because I did not place the first year, and then I was 4th runner-up and I dropped back out of the top 20," said Rebecca, who noted that after several disappointments her decision to run for a fourth and final time was very difficult. "I'm sure glad I did!" added Rebecca.
Rebecca won the swimsuit and talent portions on the second and third preliminary nights. For her talent, she tap-danced to the Royal Crown Revue's Hey Pachuco.
Robinson will begin immediately preparing to represent the Lone Star State in the Miss America Pageant to be held in Las Vegas in January. Rebecca will also be featured in TLC's Miss America: Reality Check, which is scheduled to begin filming in September.
The Miss Texas first runner-up was Faith Bates, Miss Hunt Co. Sydney Capello was crowned Miss Teen Texas. Capello, who is Miss Teen Duncanville, sang "Midnight Train to Georgia."
The Miss Teen Texas runner-up was Taylor Lowery, who is Miss Teen Plano.
