Panola County Death Index, Volume 1

Abstracted by Marylee W. Knight, 2003

Although official death records began much earlier in other areas, Panola County did not begin recording deaths until 1903. The first recorded death occurred on April 26, 1903 when Hensley Johnson was "hung to a tree by a mob".

These records are sporadic at best because they contain only those deaths in which a physician was in attendance. People who died at home and were buried by their friends and relatives do not appear here.

The doctors, particularly the rural ones, did not rush to the Courthouse to file the Death Certificate immediately upon the death of one of their patients. They filed them whenever it fell handy to do so. Therefore, from one line to the next in the ledger, the dates of death are in no particular order.

This is just the first few pages of Volume 1 of the Death Records. As time permits, I will add more pages of information.
