  Ms. Adams died Saturday in a Longview hospital. She was born on June 12, 1928 in Tatum to Prespey and Molly Cook Fry.

  Graveside services for Ronald Dean Huggins, 64, of Longview will be held today, Aug 30, 2001 at 4:00 pm at Stewart Cemetery with the Rev. Kelly Carnes officiating. Interment will be in Stewart Cemetery under the direction of Crawford-A. Crim Funeral Home. Mr. Huggins died Aug 27, 2001 in Longview.
  Mr. Huggins was born Jan 12, 1937 in Kerens TX. He worked for Key Energy Service and was a former owner / operator truck driver. He served in the US Army. He is preceded in death by his parents William and Frances Huggins and one grandson Tomas Alvarez.
  Survivors include his wife Betty Kate Huggins of Longview; daughter and son-in-law Beth and Travis Smith of Lubbock; step-daughter and husband Carla K. and Miles Alvarez of Tatum; stepson and wife Jim O. and Melissa Matthews of Tatum; three grandsons; three step grandchildren; two brothers Clifford Huggins of Oregon and Eddie Huggins of Houston and one sister Tova Gilmore of LaGrande OR.

STACY, Mary Jimmerson

  Graveside services for Mrs. Mary Jimmerson Stacy, 86, of Tatum, will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, Sept 1, 2001 at Harmony Hill Cemetery with the Rev. Wayne Dickerson officiating. Interment will be under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. Mrs. Stacy died Tuesday, Aug 28, 2001 in Henderson.
  Mrs. Stacy was born Feb 4, 1915 in the Dirgin Community near Tatum in Rusk County to James R. and Mary Pepper Jimmerson. She married George Lee Stacy in September 1935 and together they celebrated 50 years of marriage before his death in 1985. She was a home maker and had been a member of the Tatum United Pentecostal Church for over 60 years. Mrs. Stacy is preceded in death by three sisters: Mossie Hillin, Daisy Allred and Johnnie Bell Matthews; five brothers Fred, Angus, Bill, Edward and Roy Jimmerson.
  Survivors include nieces and nephews: Mildred Campbell of Henderson, Hubert Hillin of Henderson, Roy Hill and wife Charlotte of Tatum, Opalene Wallace and husband Brady of Henderson, Mary Louise Bridges of Henderson, Betty Mayden and husband Hubert of Grand Prairie, Albert Jimmerson and wife Gracie of Grand Prairie, William Jimmerson and wife Gracie of Grand Prairie, Nora Ann Tipps and husband Don of Henderson, Billie Joyce Tillery and husband Bobby of Tyler, Jimmy Matthews and wife Ann of Conroe, Albert Matthews of Tatum, Johnny Ray Matthews of Tatum, Oleda Nearn ofo Henderson, Birgie Colby and husband Earl of Henderson, Barbara Hernandez and husband Jessie of Rusk County, James H.   Mrs. Wellborn was born Aug 6, 1935 in Longview and had been a lifetime East Texas resident.
  She is survived by her husband George Wellborn of Tatum; three sons Danny Williamson of Diana and Jimmy and David Wellborn both of Tatum; three daughters Carolyn Morgan of Quinlan, Brenda Ridens of Garland and Janette Castleberry of Longview; her mother Mary Drake of East Mountain; three brothers Bobby Drake of Dallas, Sammy Drake of Chalk Hill and Jackie Drake of East Mountain; three sisters Norma Sueden of Kansas City MO, Shirley Shank of Winnsboro and Nancy Mooring of Fayetteville, AR.

  Graveside services for Patsy Vice Woods, 59, of Kilgore, formerly of Harris Chapel, were held on Sunday, Aug 26, 2001 at 2 pm at the Harris Chapel Cemetery with the Rev. Dale Reed officiating. Interment was under the direction of Don Lipsey Funeral Home of Carthage.
  Mrs. Woods died Friday morning, Aug 24, 2001 at her residence in Kilgore. She was born on Sept 12, 1941 in Panola County. She was the daughter of Levi and Ruby Mae Brown Vice. She had residences in Kilgore and Gilmer. She was a home maker and of the Baptist faith. She was preceded in death by her husband, John Thomas "J.T." Woods, her parents and a sister Dorothy Nell Vice Snooks.
  Mrs. Woods is survived by a daughter Glynda Monic and husband Allen of Carthage; two sons Thomas Young and wife Arlean of Gilmer and Jason Woods of Gilmer; two sisters Hattie Rue Vice Schultz of Maybank and Melba Sue Lowe and husband Cotton of Conroe; two brothers Robert Moses Vice and wife Mary of Cleveland and Aubry Lee Vice and wife Linda of New Caney; two grand daughters Brandy Haden Mosley and husband Sammy of Kilgore and Karen Ann Shires and Stephen Doggett of Arlington.

BALL, Violet "Bessie" Williams

  Violet "Bessie" Williams Ball, 92, a resident of Silver City, passed away Saturday, Aug 11, 2001 at the home of Howard and Bobbie Little. The funeral service was held on Tuesday, Aug 14, 2001 at 2:00 pm.
  She was born in Panola County TX on Nov 20, 1908 to A.B. (Alfred Banks) and Pansy Williams who preceded her in death. She had one brother Hollis Williams who died in 1978. She was married to Rowland Ball at First Baptist Church Parsonage in Silver City on May 12, 1931. He preceded her in death the day after their 61st wedding anniversary. She was the mother of Dona Irwin of Deming NM and Bobbie Neal-Little and Husband Howard of Silver City; and grandmother of Janet Irwin Smyer (Richard) of Prescott AZ, Craig Irwin (Mackey) of Las Cruces NM, Kim Neal Allen (Steve) of Deming NM and Lyn Neal (Kim) of Silver City. Her nieces are Sherelle Wilkerson (P.D.) and Bonnie Jo Rogers (Bill) and nephews Allen Williams (Kitty) and Larry Williams (Thelma). Also surviving her are Ada Robinson, Debbie and Joe Piznezza and family, Ralph and Jean Williams and family of Beckville, Troy and Judy Williams and family of Tatum, Wanda and Johnny Gray and family; nine great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. She was a grandmother to all of her nieces and nephews.
  Pallbearers were Craig Irwin, Lyn Neal, Richard Smyer, Steve Allen, Chase Irwin and Justin Allen.

  Survivors include his wife Cora B. Beckworth; two daughters Brenda Tatum and Mattie P. Horton both of Tatum; six sons Joe Billy, Albert and Jerry Beckworth all of Tatum; Charles and Rosco Beckworth both of Longview and Fritz Beckworth of Desoto; 19 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren. One daughter Everlena Ervin preceded him in death.

CAPPS, Walter "Junior"

  Funeral services were conducted for Walter "Junior" Capps, 91, of Tatum at 2:00 pm Friday, Aug 17, 2001, at Jimerson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Will officiating. Interment followed at Tatum Cemetery under the direction of Jimerson Funeral Home. Mr. Capps passed away Wednesday, Aug 15, 2001 in a Carthage health care center.
  Mr. Capps, a lifetime resident of Tatum, was born on April 1, 1910 to Ancel Walton and Amy Welch Capps, Sr. He was married to Pearl Ferguson Capps for 69 years. He retired from Santa Fe Railroad where he worked in construction for 25 years. After retirement he enjoyed watching a good baseball game and professional wrestling. He attended the Church of Christ in Tatum.
  Loving survivors include his wife Pearl Capps of Tatum; son Johnny Wayne Capps of Springfield OR; daughters Sue Masters of Carthage, Barbara Dollahite of Gladewater and Bonnie Logan of Spring Town; grandchildren Georgianna Givens, Clarence Logan, Tina Leath, Cecil Propes, Dustin Capps, Debbie Morgan, Ricky Morgan, Betty Brooks, June Eays and Peggy Wade; several great grandchildren. His parents, a brother Albert Capps and a sister Mary Wilson preceded him in death.

  Mr. Holiday was born Feb. 19, 1919, in Daingerfield and had been a resident of East Mountain since 1955. He was a lifetime resident of the East Texas area. He was the owner and operator of Jake Holiday Construction Co. and loved his work and was very active in his business until earlier this year. He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army, and he was a member of the Baptist Church. Jake was a wonderful husband and the greatest daddy, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was loved by anyone who knew him and will be missed by all.
  Survivors include his loving wife of 60 years, Adell Holiday of East Mountain; a daughter, Pat Gunby of East Mountain; three grandchildren, Dwayne Brown of East Mountain, Dwight Reynolds of DeBerry and Darwin Gunby of East Mountain; one great-granddaughter; five great-grandsons; two brothers, A.V.   Funeral services for Rev. Lee Roy Anderson, Jr., 50, of Carthage, will be held at 3 pm Sunday, August 12, 2001 at Jimerson Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Bob Scott, Carl Anderson, and Allan Moore will officiate. Interment will follow at Youngblood Cemetery in Beckville. Arrangements are under the direction of Jimerson Funeral Home. He passed away Thursday after a brief illness at the local hospital.
  Anderson was born on Feb. 24, 1951 to Lee Roy and Emma Doris Heard Anderson, Sr. in Carthage where he was raised. He was married to Elsa Terante Anderson and preached for four years at Good Hope Freewill Baptist Church in Henderson and then became the minister of Buncombe Freewill Baptist Church where he preached from 1979 to 1988.
  At present, Anderson has been the minister for the past 14 years at Mt. Union Freewill Baptist Church in Garrison. He served several terms as the Moderator of Freewill District Association and is a current Credential Committee member and the past chairman. His company, True Form Concrete Contractor of Carthage, also kept him busy.
  He proudly served in the U. S. Navy during the Vietnam War and was in active duty for 18 of those months. Anderson established the "Bypassed American Veterans Organization". Family and close friends called him "Uncle Bull'. He was preceded in death by his father.
  Survivors include his wife, Elsa Anderson, of Carthage; daughter, Sheryl Jean Anderson, of Carthage; mother, Emma Doris Heard Anderson, of Carthage; brothers, Rev. Carl Anderson, of Carthage and Keith Anderson, of Crockett; sister and brother-in-law, Denise and Steve Coots, of Carthage; sister-in-law, Deanne Anderson, of Crockett; several nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews.
  Pallbearers will be Wayne Gaddy, Murvaul McGuire, Bobo Little, Kenneth Rector, Andy Favors, and Jimmy Glenn Anderson. Honorary pallbearers will be Gordon Tompkins, cousins and nephews.
  Visitation with the family was held Saturday, August 11, 2001 from 6 to 8 pm at Jimerson Funeral Home.

  Born in Dallas, he was the son of Virginia E. (Moore) Bate and the late Laurence Bate. Bate, who was a Barrington resident, had been employed as vice president of ADP Marshall Construction Company of East Providence for the past 13 years. He was a member of Barrington Baptist Church.

  Funeral services for Wilma Ruth Carrico, 81, of the Antioch Community in Panola County, were held Tuesday, July 31, 2001 at Lipsey Family Funeral Home Chapel. Doctors Louis Caldwell and Joseph Clark, and the Rev. Billy Shoffner officiated. Burial followed in Corinth Cemetery under the direction of Lipsey Family Funeral Home. She died Thursday, July 26, 2001 at Panola Care and Rehab Center.
  Born Jan. 29, 1920 in Haslem, she was the daughter of Bill and Ruth Stay Archer. She moved back to Panola County in 1978 from Houston, and was a member of Northside Christian Center of Carthage. She was a LVN nurse at Methodist Hospital in Houston for 15 years. She married Leroy Carrico on March 18, 1936 in Gary. They celebrated 65 years of marriage.
  Survivors include her husband, Leroy Carrico, of Antioch; sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Pauline Carrico, of Monument, Colo., and Dusty Carrico, of Henderson; daughters and sons-in-law, Mamie and Louis Caldwell, of Houston, and Sondra and David Walls, of Conroe; brothers, Frank Archer, of Antioch, Jimmy Archer, of Tucson, Ariz.; sisters, Marie (Pee Wee) Hoback, Nedabell Vaughn, and Loma Lisa Brown, all of Tucson; 13 grandchildren, and 15 great-grandchildren.
  Pallbearers were Guye Allen, Mark Krischke, Bubby Caldwell, David Caldwell, Brad Caldwell, Steve Carrico, Mark Carrico, and Greg Scroggins.

Mrs. McDonald died July 31, 2001 in Briarcliff Health Center, Carthage. Born January 24, 1906, in Gary, she was the daughter of Johnny James and Mary Horton Smith. She was retired as an elementary Teacher for Gary, ISD. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Gary. She was married to Harry McDonald, and he preceded her in death. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Burns of Timpson; brother J. R. Smith of Jefferson and Alvie Smith of Carthage; sister, Letie Mae Beasley of Gary; two grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.

  Funeral services for Bill Merrill Lentz, 68, of Denham Springs, LA, formerly of Carthage, were held Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Seale Funeral Home Chapel in Denham Springs. The Revs. Danny Henderson and J. V. Scivicque officiated. Burial followed in Evergreen Memorial Park Mausoleum in Denham Springs under the direction of Seale Funeral Home. He died July 26, 2001 at Our Lady of the Lake Regional Medical Center in Baton Rouge.
  A native of Carthage, he was the son of the late Royce M. and Mabel Herron Lentz. He was a United States Army veteran, and a member of First Baptist Church in Denham Springs where he taught the Adult Three Sunday School Class. He was also a member of the Masonic Orders, J. C. Stewart Lodge #460, board member of Algea Kleen, Inc., and the Crusin Cajuns' Motor Home Club. He was a graduate of the University of Texas, and was preceded in death by his parents.
  Survivors include his wife, Doris O'Neal Lentz, of Denham Springs; daughters and son-in-law, Sharon and Terry Moran, and Jan Lentz; sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Jacque Lentz, and David and Rindy Lentz; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Dwain Hardin; grandchildren, Michael Scott McDaniel, Brandi Foreacker, Paul Jr., Sarah, Nikki, Michelle Lentz, Toby and Cory Woodrich; and three great-grandchildren.

  CARTHAGE - Services for Mildred Chamness Shepherd, 81, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 31,2001, at the First United Methodist Church in Carthage with the Rev. Gary Fitzgerald and the Rev. Don Scott officiating. Burial will be in Rehobeth Cemetery under the direction of Jimerson Funeral Home.
  Mrs. Shepherd was born July 3, 1920, to Elmer and Lena Chamness and was a life-long resident of Carthage, where she was a member of the First United Methodist Church and the Teammates Sunday school class. She died Saturday, July 28, 2001, at Willis Knighton Hospital in Bossier City, La., after a brief illness. Her parents, one brother, Barber Chamness, and two sisters, Opal Belew and Aileen Barton, preceded her in death.
  Mrs. Shepherd is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Ray Shepherd of Carthage; one daughter and her husband, Annette and James Powell of Nederland; one son and his wife, Larry and Georgia Shepherd of Carthage; four grandchildren, Virginia Shepherd Calderon of Longview, John David Powell of Port Arthur, Lee Shepherd Ekern of San Antonio and Steven Ray Powell of Austin; and three great-grandchildren, Melissa Calderon A. J. Calderon and Sydney Powell.
  Mrs. Shepherd worked along side her husband, Ray, to build Standard Outdoor Advertising, where she was employed as a secretary for 20 years. She enjoyed her hobbies of fishing and gardening. Mrs. Shepherd was a dedicated church member who ministered to shut-ins by serving them communion and sharing homemade sweet treats with them on a regular basis. She was a volunteer for many years at Panola Nursing Home.
  Viewing will be at 1 p.m. today, July 30, and the family will receive friends 6-8 p.m. today, July 30, at the funeral home.

HOPPER, Violet Irene

  A memorial graveside service for Violet Irene Hopper, formerly of Beckville, was held July 21, 2001 in Green Forest, Ark. She died July 18, 2001 in Berryville, Ark.
  Born October 1, 1926 in Coffeyville, Kan., she was the daughter of Reuben and Lanora Mathis. She married Lloyd Hopper, of Blue Eye, Mo., on March 27, 1945. They had five children. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and son, Michael Don Hopper.
  Although she had recently returned to Arkansas to live, she had many friends, relatives, and acquaintances in the Carthage area where she resided for several years. She was loved dearly and will be missed by all.
  Survivors include her sister, Beverly Kelley, of Clovis, Calif., sons and daughters-in-law, Gary and Karen Hopper, of Green Forest, and Rusty and Nancy Hopper, of New London, Mo.; daughters and sons-in-law, Valerie and Sam Vandegriff, of Beckville, and Beverly and Bobby Neal, of Berryville; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

KULIG, Jeffrey Glenn

  Services for Jeffrey Glenn Kulig, 28, of Bowling Green, Fla., were held at noon Saturday, July 28, at Robarts Family Funeral Home, Inc., in Wauchula, Fla. Local services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 31, at Tatum Holiness Church in Tatum with the Rev. Doyle Staton and the Rev. Jimmie Ferrell officiating. Burial will be in Chalk Hill Cemetery under the direction of Welch Funeral Home, 210 S. Green Street. Mr. Kulig died Wednesday, July 25, 2001, in Sun City Center, Fla., as the result of an industrial accident.
  Mr. Kulig was born Dec. 19, 1972, in Longview to Roger Glenn and Pamela Jean Nelms Kulig. He graduated from the Bible Christian Academy in Tatum and was a member of the Tatum Holiness Church. He was a lineman for Dillard Smith Construction Co. in Riverview, Fla. After living in Tatum, Mr. Kulig moved to Hardee County, Fla., and had been a resident there for five years. He was a member of Mission Holiness Church in Wauchula and belonged to I. B. E. W. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Calvin and Billie Nelms of Longview, S. M. "Steve" Kulig of Tucson, Ariz., and Reba Beaty of Longview.
  Mr. Kulig is survived by his wife, Ketus Ann of Bowling Green, Fla.; one son, Jeffrey Calvin "J.C." of Bowling Green, Fla.; one daughter, Houston Ray Ann of Bowling Green, Fla.; his parents, Roger and Pam Kulig of Tatum; one brother, Randy Joe Kulig of Tatum; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Shawnda and Jim Ferrell and Amanda and Ben Ferrell of Chalk Hill; three sisters and two brothers-in-law, Tiffany Kulig of Tatum and Belinda and Jonathon Baird of Plano and Tiawana and Phil Bumby of Wauchula, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews, Micah, Katelyn, Zachary, Jennifer, Jessica, Benjamin and Robert.

  Mrs. Bryant was preceded in death by her first husband and the father of her children, Dr. W.A. "Bill" Lanagan, former superintendent of Pine Tree ISD in Longview.
  She is survived by her husband of 32 years, E.L. "Tex" Bryant; a sister, Mrs. D.M. Stovall of Carthage; a brother, Fred Massingill of Longview; three sons, Tony Lanagan of Dallas, Mike Lanagan of Nacogdoches and Bill Lanagan of West Palm Beach, Fla.
  Mrs. Bryant is also survived by one niece, Katherine Branch of Woodville; one nephew, Steve Stovall of Nacogdoches; and her grandchildren, Tony Lanagan of Austin, Kaci Lanagan and Ryan Lanagan, both of Nacogdoches, and Tyler Lanagan of West Palm Beach, Fla.
  Mary was a farm girl, a loving mother, a devoted companion and an "Angel on Earth." She was loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

She was a member of Eight Avenue Baptist Church, and was a retail clerk in the gift shop business. She was preceded in death by her husband, Deward H. Carter.

  Funeral services for O. A. Cassity, 75, of Carthage, will be held at 10 am Thursday, July 26, 2001 at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Joe E. Cariker and Dr. J. B. Morris will officiate. Burial will follow in Longbranch Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. He died Monday, July 23, 2001 in Carthage.
  Born March 25, 1926 in Longbranch, he was the son of Osce and Clifford Cariker Cassity. He attended Longbranch and Carthage schools as well as Panola College. He married Sybil Pinkerton on May 30, 1948 and they celebrated more than 53 years of marriage. He served as Texas State Representative for a few years, and retired from National Gas.
  He was also a rancher, and served as a chairman of the Panola College Board of Trustees for a number of years. He was a longtime member of St. Andrews United Methodist Church where he was an advisory board member and served as treasurer. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and fishing. He was preceded in death by his son, O. A. Cassity III; daughter, Kathy Jean Cassity; and his sister, Mary Jean Cassity.
  Survivors include his wife, Sybil Cassity, of Carthage; brother and sister-in-law, Sid and Allyne Cassity, of Carthage; niece and her spouse, Susan Cassity and David Duncan, of Tatum; and great-nieces, Skye and Stormie Duncan. Honorary pallbearers will be members of St. Andrews United Methodist Church.
  On Wednesday, the body will lie in state at 8 am at the funeral home, and family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm at the funeral home.

  Funeral services for Polly Ann Ault McGuire, 67, of Longview, sister of Carthage resident Mary Parker, were held Monday, July 23, 2001 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in Gilmer. Bishop William D. Craig officiated. Burial followed in Kelsey Cemetery in Upshur County under the direction of Grubbs-Loyd Funeral Home in Gilmer. She died Saturday, July 21, 2001 in Longview.
  Born June 6, 1934 in Upshur County, she was the daughter of James Jefferson and Addie Mae Jones Ault. She was a native of Gilmer, and married Gary Wendell McGuire on August 29, 1959 in Longview. She was employed as a telephone operator for Southwestern Bell.

  Born Feb 28, 1948 in Beaumont, he was the son of Charles and Irma Rightly. He was a Navy veteran of the Vietnam War and upon discharge, began his long career in the heating and air conditioning industry. He was married to Sue Rightly for 23 years.

He attended Carthage Church of Christ, and was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Phillips Livesay; parents; and sister-in-law, Alice Livesay Kauitzch.

  Funeral services for Agnes Andrews Cannon, 87, of Carthage, will be held at 11am Thursday, July 19, 2001 at First United Methodist Church in Carthage. Dr Gary Fitzgerald and Rev. Don Scott will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. Hope Cemetery in Rusk County under the direction of Lipsey Family Funeral Home. She died Monday, July 16, 2001 at Briarcliff Health Center in Carthage.
  Born March 28, 1914 in Chandler, she was the daughter of Charles and Eva Cleveland Andrews. She received her BS and MS degrees from the University of North Texas in health, physical education and recreation, and began her career as a coach of women's sports at French High School in Beaumont. From there, she became the girl's basketball coach at Gaston High School where she met her husband Riley Cannon.
  Coach Cannon taught physical education at Carthage High School, and organized the school's first girl's basketball program. The Cannons won a district title under her leadership, and she and her husband were active at First United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School. From Carthage, they moved to Denton where she taught in the Physical Education Department at The University of North Texas, directed basketball clinics and ran regional tournaments.
  She was a championship bowler and accomplished golfer, as well as excelling in many other sports. She later taught at Mercedes High School, and was a member of Delta Psi Kappa and Kappa Delta Pi. In 1966, she was recognized in Who's Who Among American Women, and in 1970 she was inducted in Personalities of the South. After the death of her beloved husband, she returned to Carthage where she resided at 805 W. Sabine. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and her sister, Edna Joe Youngblood.
  Survivors include her sister's children, Eloise Newhard and husband Jack, of Atlanta, GA, Elaine Dodgen and husband Jack, of Boynton Beach, FL, Milly Kyle and husband Wayne, of Carthage, Don Williamson and wife Barbara, of Los Vegas, NV, Carmen Thomas and husband Bob, of Atlanta, GA, and Ann Turner and husband Ron, of Houston.
  Also remaining are special grandchildren Kelly Coker, husband Cheney and son Cameron, Riley Kyle, wife Yvonne and children Amber and Daniel, and Kit Kyle, as well as 26 other grand and great-grand-nieces and nephews.
  Pallbearers will be Dr. Wayne Kyle, Riley Kyle, Kit Kyle, Ron Turner, Cheney Coker and Del Moore.

  Born May 29, 1910 in Panola County, she was the daughter of Sam and Arrie Brinkley. She was an active member of Second Baptist Church in Corpus Christi for more than 60 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Troy Hardin; and daughter Elaine.
  Survivors include her brothers, Jim and Reginald Brinkley, both of Houston; and sister Catherine Lewis, of Beaumont; and numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

  Born Sept. 15, 1910 to proud parents Jesse Carlton Pike and Era Mae Bruster in Panola County, where she was reared and lived for the remainder of life. She met and married Barber E. Chamness. After working 20 years at Carthage Independent School District in food services, she retired.
  Working in her beautiful yard and tending to her flowers gave her great joy. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Women's and also a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and brother, Charles E. Pike.
  Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Ray and Sandra Chamness, of Carthage; brother and sister-in-law, J. C. and Nelene Pike, of Carthage; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Mildred and Ray Shepherd, of Carthage; grandchildren, Greg Chamness and Kerry Don Chamness; great-grandchildren, Brock Ryan Chamness and Karas Brooke Chamness; three nieces and one nephew.

  Funeral services for Don Reed, 69, of Dallas, relative of several Panola County residents, were held Friday, July 13, 2001, at Jaynes Memorial Funeral Home Chapel in Duncanville. Burial followed in the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery under the direction of Jaynes Memorial Funeral Home. Local obituary was furnished by Lipsey Family Funeral Home. He died Monday, July 9, 2001, in an automobile accident returning from a Seagoville area pastor's meeting.
  Born Sept. 15, 1931 in Dallas, he was a graduate of Crozier Tech High School and attended Arlington State College. He married Billie Jean Thornton on Feb. 10, 1951. He was an Air Force veteran, and served in the 57th Airborne Weather Squadron based at Hickman Field in Honolulu, Hawaii from August 1951 to August 1954.
  He returned to college and received a bachelor of Sacred Literature, cum laude from Dallas Christian College in 1974, after being in business with his father for seven years. He had served as pastor for various congregations, with his most extended period of service with First Christian Church in Seagoville where he had ministered for 14 years.
  Reed was an accomplished marksman and hunter, a distinguished artist and art instructor, but most of all a loving husband and father who was unfaltering in his role as protector and provider.
  Survivors include his wife, Billie Reed, of Dallas; son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Jean Reed, of Carthage; daughters, Debbie Bowling and family, of Red Oak, and Becky Polen and family, of Garland; 11 grandchildren including Cyndi, Kristin, and Laura Reed, of Carthage; one great-grandchild; mother, Goldia Reed, of Dallas; and brother, Herbert Edward Reed, of Duncanville.

BRAZEAL, Carl R.

  CARTHAGE - Funeral services for Carl R. Brazeal, 71, of Tatum will be held at 10 a.m. today, July 11, 2001, at the First Baptist Church of Tatum with the Rev. Kenneth Nichols and the Rev. Trey Roberson officiating. Interment will follow in Tatum Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Jimerson Funeral Home. Mr. Brazeal died Tuesday, July 10, 2001, after a brief illness.
  Mr. Brazeal was born June 3, 1930, to Roy M. and Hazel Trobaugh Brazeal in Thayer, Mo. He met and married Dorothy Marie Head on July 25, 1953. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War, where he received a Purple Heart and the U.N. Korean Service Medal. From 1953 to 1965, Mr. and Mrs. Brazeal lived in Pleasant Hill, Mo., where Chevrolet Corp. employed him in Kansas City, Mo., and he owned Brazeal Feed Grinding Co. Upon moving to East Texas, the Brazeals settled in Tatum in 1974. Once in Tatum, Mr. Brazeal was a self-employed welder, and after his retirement he started a family lawn mower repair business. The local area knew him as "The Lawn Mower Man." The family attended First Baptist Church of Tatum, and Mr. Brazeal was also a member of the VFW and American Legion in Henderson.
  Mr. Brazeal is survived by his loving wife and dear friend, Dorothy Marie Brazeal of Tatum; his daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Don McGraw of Dallas; and his sons and daughters-in-law, Frank and Susan Brazeal of Tatum and Marvin and Mickey Brazeal of Tatum; and a sister, Barbara Durnell of Harrisonville, Mo. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Laurie and her husband Matt, also Kobe, Kelsey and Kimberly McGraw, all of Dallas; Carol and her husband, Darin Pasche of Longview; and Tony, Evan and Dylan Brazeal of Tatum. His great-grandchildren are Tyler and Austin Pasche of Longview. He is also survived by his longtime friend, Glenn Harbison of Kilgore. His parents preceded him in death.
  Pallbearers will be Jack Radford, Jerry Fincher, Leroy Collins, Lawrence Head, Leon Jones, Mike Jones, LaMar Guy and Lawrence Pasche. Honorary pallbearers will be Tony, Evan and Dylan Brazeal.

  Born Sept. 14, 1921 in Gary, she was the daughter of T. P. and Brazziere McClemore Johnson. She attended New Salem public school system, and at an early age she joined Shady Grove Missionary Baptist Church. She later joined First Assembly of God in Christ in the Pope Quarters. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Willie L. Johnson, Willie B. Johnson, Leroy Johnson, and John P. Johnson; and a sister, Vertie L. Ingram.

  Born May 4, 1912 in Panola County, he was the son of Cliff and Ola Williams Rich. He had lived all of his life in Panola County, and was a member of Midyette Springs Baptist Church. He was elected to five consecutive terms as County Commissioner of Precinct #3 serving from 1955 to 1976, when he retired on Dec. 31, 1976.
  He was a rancher, 32 degree Mason, and member of the Sharon Temple Shrine. He was preceded in death by his wife, Tootsie Rich; son, Allen Rhea Beard; brothers Carl and Garland Rich; and sister, Ina Lee Deason and Frances Sirmons.
  Survivors include his daughter-in-law, Patricia Beard Best, of Thornton, Colo.; grandchildren, Ventriss Whelan, of Springfield, Va, William S. Beard, of Grand Junction, Colo., Patricia Bautista, and Rhea C. Beard, all of Thornton, Colo.; and great-grandchildren, Meredith, Ben, A. J., Patrick and Anne.

Funeral services for Odessa Ruth Tice, 81, of Carthage. were held Sunday, July 1, 2001 at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dewayne Bardwell officiated. Burial followed in Mount Bethel Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. She died Friday, June 29, 2001, in Carthage.
  Born Sept. 8, 1919 in rural Panola County, she was the daughter of Thomas Franklin and Erbie Nancy Walling Shires. She was schooled in rural Mt. Bethel, and spent her life as a loving homemaker and mother. She was a talented seamstress and known for her cooking. She worked several years as a nurses aide for Panola Nursing Home. She was preceded in death by her brothers, George Allen and Thomas Alfred Shires; and sisters, Lucille Honeycutt and Geneva Brown.
  Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Sharon Tice, of Katy, Edwin V. "Sluggo" Jr. and Mary Francis Tice, of Houston, and Dotria Allen "Mo" and Liz Tice, of Deer Park; grandchildren, Terri Tice, E. V. "Rip" Tice III, Kimberly Renee Pavlus, Billy Tice, Adam Tice, Taylor Tice, and Michael Tice; great-grandchildren, Renee Pavlus, Whitney Pavlus, Christna Pavlus and Tiffini Tice; numberous nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

  Born October 11, 1920 in Groesbeck, she was the daughter of Talmage Luther and Birdie Lee Pyland Geeslin. Her family moved to Kilgore when she was an infant and remained there until she was 17, at which time she moved to Tucson, Ariz. where she lived until 1990. She then moved to Conroe for five years and in 1995 moved to DeBerry.
  While living in the country setting of DeBerry, it gave her the perfect change to enjoy a few of her favorite pastimes including fishing and camping. When she was at home she loved to cook and her favorite things to bake were pies. Crocheting was another pastime that gave her great pleasure. She was married to the late Robert George Nichols, and was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and son Luther Ray Ellis.
  Survivors include her daughter and son-in-law, of DeBerry; daughter-in-law, Wilma Jean Ellis, of Tucson; sisters, Peggy King and Lorraine Geeslin; grandchildren, Eddie Fuller and his wife Melanie, Janette Allen and her husband Lenny, Freddie Fuller and his wife Vicki, Dora Faye Stephens and Rose Ann Ellis; 17 great grandchildren; great-great granddaughter, Madison Olmos; and her niece Kena Sue Richwine.
  Serving as pallbearers will be Eddie Fuller, Freddie Fuller, Lenny Allen, Ricky Olmos, Stephen Allen, Rick Olmos, Kerry Conner and Cheyenne Fuller.

  Graveside services for Grace Lavern Langley, 68, of Carthage, were held Tuesday, June 19, 2001, in Antioch Cemetery. The Revs. Larry Hutto and Harold Gunstanson officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. She died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at her home.
  Born Sept. 14, 1932 in Panola County, she was the daughter of Neborn and Fonnie Mae Pate Soape. She was reared in the Baptist faith, and attended school at Pleasant Ridge Baptist Church where she was a member. She married Lonnie Langley and they celebrated 33 years of marriage before his death in April of 2000. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Tippit Soape; sister, Ruth Hutto; and her granddaughter, Joni Tubb.
  Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, Roy and Sheila Briery, of Beckville, Ronny Briery, and Dale and Bobbie Briery, all of Carthage, David Langley, of Biloxi, Miss., and John and Joanie Langley, of Vilonia, Ark.; daughters and sons-in-law, Gale Duncan, of Arlington, Vicki and Herb.

  Funeral Services for Billy Wayne Bellamy, Sr., 67, of Corpus Christi, TX, relative of numerous Panola County, TX residents, will be held at 11 am Thursday at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Jerry Anderson will officiate. Burial will follow in Rehobeth Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. He died June 5, 2001 in Corpus Christi, TX.
  Born Dec. 31, 1933 in Marshall, TX, he was the son of Edgar T. Sr. and Annie B. Evans Bellamy. He served his country with the United States Army in the Korean Conflict, and retired from Coastal States Refinery. He was a member of the Corpus Christi Lodge No. 189, A. F. & A. M. Masonic Lodge, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #3837 and the Cooties Pup Tent.
  Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Billy Wayne Jr. and Becky Bellamy, of Waco, TX; daughter and son-in-law, Nita and Ty Romike, of Odem, TX; grandchildren, Mary Catherine Bellamy, of Corpus Christi, TX and Kimberly and Dustin Romike, of Odem, TX; sisters, Bertie Ruth Johnson, of Fresno, CA; Eva Humphries, of Walton, MA; Maurine Wheat, of Couer D.   Born April 29, 1936 in Baltimore, MD, she was the daughter of Laura Silver and Theodore Hartman. She was a receptionist for Olan Mills Studio, and spent the majority of her life in the Baltimore area. She recently moved to DeBerry to the home of her son, Kenneth Richter. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Clifford J. Richter, and Richard J. Maeby.

  Mr. Henderson was a retired self-employed barber.

  Funeral service for Karen Jeanette Beamon, 57, of Rusk, mother of Carthage resident Vanessa Foster, were held Thursday, May 31, 2001, at Grace Fellowship Church in Rusk. The Rev. Keith Hassell officiated. Burial followed in Mt. Hope Cemetery under the direction of Wallace-Thompson Funeral Home in Rusk. She died Monday, May 28, 2001, in a Rusk Hospital.
  Born August 1, 1943 in Houston, she had been a resident of Rusk for 25 years, and was a member of Grace Fellowship Church. She was a caregiver for Felder's in Alto and worked for ABC Daycare in Rusk. She was preceded in death by her parents, Philip and Mildred Lentz; and a sister, Sheila Lentz.

JOHNSON, Dillard Lee

  Funeral services for Dillard Lee Johnson, 73, of the Yarnell Community, were held Thursday at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Dale Reed and Glenn Kocurek officiated. Burial followed in the Adams Cemetery in Logan under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. He died Tuesday, May 29, 2001, at his home.
  Born Nov. 29, 1927 in Logan, he was the son of the late Thomas Lee and Mary Beatrice Lawrence Johnson. He attended school in Logan and Logansport. He married Mary Lou Jones on Dec. 24, 1949 and they celebrated more than 51 years of marriage before his death. He served his country with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict.
  Johnson retired from the Texas Forest Service as a forestry technician II and also was a rancher. He was a devoted member of Mt. Pleasant Missionary Baptist Church in Logan, and was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7954 in Keatchie. He enjoyed hunting and rodeos. He was also preceded in death by his sisters: Dorothy Jean Johnson Powell and Corette Hesser.
  Survivors include his wife, Mary Lou Johnson, of Yarnell; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Rev. Homer Powell, of Logan, Bernard and Elva Jones, of the Shady Grove Community, Leonard and Arlie Jones, of the Centennial Community, and Myna Pope, of the Shiloh Community.
  Also surviving Johnson are his nieces and nephews, Jimmy Muller, of Keithville, LA, Teuna Dianne Powell Cook and her husband, Rick, of Waskom, Dale Powell and his wife, Sondra, of Magnolia, AR, and Danny Powell and his wife, Dora, of Miami, FL; and numerous other relatives and a host of friends.

  Born Feb. 25, 1921 in Bronson, she was the daughter of Wat and Alice Palmer. She had lived in Carthage for 20 years, formerly of Shreveport. She graduated from Tri-State Hospital Nursing School in 1945, and was employed by the McGehee, Ark. School District as a school nurse for many years. She was a member of the McGehee Baptist Church in McGehee, and married A. B. (Buster) Davis on Sept. 21, 1946 in Minden, La.
  Survivors include her husband, A. B. (Buster) Davis, of Carthage; sons and daughters-in-law, Michael B. Sr. and Susie Davis, of Harlingen, and Joe M. and Kerri Davis, of Waco; grandchildren, Michael B. Jr. Davis and his wife, Melissa, and Preston A. Davis, all of Harlingen, and Martin M.   Born December 22, 1945 in Columbia County, Ark., she was the daughter of the late A. D. and Nettie Frances Pyle Mason McWilliams. She was a homemaker, and member of Friendship Baptist Church in Carthage, and a former member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Magnolia. She was preceded in death by her brother A. G. McWilliams; and sisters, Alvie Allen, Doylene Driskell and Lottie Mae Crumpler.

  Born April 7, 1935 in Carthage, she was the daughter of the late Allen and Iaeline Jackson. She was a life long resident of Carthage, and attended Panola College enrolling in the nursing program, and also Wiley College in Marshall. She was retired as a nurse in January 1999 and a member of Pleasant Valley Baptist Church.
  Survivors include her mother, Iaeline (Crit) Jackson, of Carthage; daughters, Gale Berry, Delphine Davis, Sandra Hooker, and Shanon Pipkins, all of Carthage, and Karen Hooker, of Dallas; brother, Ezell Jackson, of Dallas; sisters, Joann Rhodes, of Carthage, and Mildred Jackson, of Dallas; brother-in-law, James Hooker, of Carthage; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Burial followed in Oddfellows Cemetery in Carthage under the direction of Jimerson Funeral Home. She died Saturday, May 26, 2001, in a local hospital.
  Born August 2, 1920, she was the daughter of Edgar and Rosa Sanford Bounds. She met and married Oscar Woods and to their union were born two children: Joe Ed Woods and Wanda Jean Woods. She resided in Carthage most of her life, and was a homemaker. She was a member of Southside Baptist Church, the ladies auxiliary and the TEL Sunday School Class. She was very active until she became ill and could no longer attend. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; her son and daughter; brother, Edwin Earl "Buddie" Bounds; and her sister, Margaret Jean "Bounds" Waits.
  Survivors include her sister-in-law, Mrs. Buddie "Barbara" Bounds, of Carthage; and several nieces and nephews.

  Born Nov. 15, 1903 in Meridian, MS, he was the son of Ben and Lenora Deason. He married Ina Lee Rich in 1925 and they celebrated 68 years of marriage before her death on Dec. 29, 1993. He worked as a chief operator for United Gas Pipeline for 42 years before retiring in 1969. He lived all of his adult life in Panola County and was a member of Central Baptist Church.
  Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law, Bobby and Rosemary Deason, of Houston; daughter, Ventriss Payne, of Carthage; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and three faithful sitters: Helen Roberts, Marguriete Griffin and Dee Barnett, all of Carthage.

MANGHAM, Geraldine Allen

  Funeral services for Geraldine Allen Mangham, 80 of Beckville, were held on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 at Ebenezer United Methodist Church. The Rev. Rick Tate officiated and burial followed in Walton Cemetery under the direction of Hawthoorn Funeral Home. She died on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 in Longview.
  Born Dec. 28, 1920 in the Grandview Community of Rusk County, she was the daughter of William Alonzo and Nora Pool Allen. She completed Grandview Community School and married Ollie D. Mangham on May 27, 1945. They celebrated more than 50 years of marriage before his death in 1996.
  Mrs. Mangham was a homemaker who also worked in the fields and farmed. She was a member of Allison Chapel Methodist Church. She was a Dallas Cowboy fan and a devoted Democrat. She was preceded in death by her daughter Naomi Kay Mangham; eight sisters and four brothers.
  Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law Allen and Brenda Hill of Longview, Johnny and Susie Hill of Hornbeck LA and Tony and Donna Hill of Palestine; daughter and son-in-law Delilah and George Henley of Sherman; 13 grandchildren, 15 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
  Pallbearers were Kirk Hill, Kris Hill, Mark Hill, Jason Henley, Jonathan Henley and Jared Hill. Honorary pallbearers were John Ackel and George Henley.

  Funeral services for George "G.P." Moore, 85, of Carthage were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 at First Baptist Church in Carthage. The Revs. Jerry Burnaman and Allen Tilley officiated. Burial followed in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Carthage under the direction of The Lipsey Family Funeral Home. He died on Wednesday, Feb. 14, 2001 at East Texas Medical Center in Carthage.
  Born June 19, 1915 in Sibley LA, he was the son of William Turner and Emily Elizabeth King Moore. He was a retired mechanic with Pippen Motor Company and was a member of First Baptist Church in Carthage for 46 years where he taught the adult men's Sunday School class and led the devotional for the adult department for many years. He was married Sallie Moore (the former Dorothy Louise Lazarus) for 63 years.
  Prior to moving to Carthage in 1955, he was a member of the Minden LA fire department and rescue squad. "Mr. George" as he was affectionately known was an avid fisherman, football and baseball fan.
  Survivors include his wife Sallie Moore of Carthage; sons and daughters-in-law Garland and Pat Moore of Waco and Sammy and Frances Lovett Moore of Flower Mound; daughter and son-in-law Susan and Nogie Lee Jones of Burleson, grandchildren and their spouses Alan Moore and Michael and Paula Moore all of Denver CO, Jodi and Randy Bratchen and Kristi and Jon Williamson all of Arlington, Jill and Aaron Jacobs and Seth Jones all of Burleson; seven great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

BENNETT, Alyne Elliott

  Graveside services for Alyne Elliott Bennett, 77, of Austin, formerly of the Reeves Community, were held on Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, in the Reeves-McMillan Cemetery in the Logan Community of Panola County. The Rev. Don Cocklin officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. She died on Tuesday, Feb. 6, 2001 in Austin.
  Born on Dec. 13, 1923 in the Reeves Community of Panola County, she was the daughter of Horace David and Ira Duke Elliott. She attended school in Panola County and Carthage and graduated from nursing school in Houston. She married Herbert Dewitt Freeman in 1957 and he preceded her in death in 1968. She later married Robert Bennett who also preceded her in death in 1978. She had been employed as a nurse at Westminister Manor in Austin and enjoyed quilting, gardening and cooking. She was devoted to her family.
  Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Robert and Kristi Freeman of Cedar Park; brothers and sisters-in-law Jimmy and Floread Elliott of the Reeves Community and Travis H. and Polly Elliott of Hemphill; sister Vicki Roberts of Carthage; grandsons Bobby Freeman and Michael Scott Freeman both of Cedar Park; and a host of friends.

CHANDLER, Malvin

  Funeral services for Malvin Chandler, 80, of Hermitage AR, father of Carthage resident Tommy Chandler, were held on Monday, Feb. 5, 2001, at Frazer's Funeral Home Chapel in Warren AR. The Revs. David Smith and Wayman Mann officiated. Burial followed in Outlaw Cemetery in Sumpter under the direction of Frazer's Funeral Home. He died on Feb. 3, 2001 at Bradley County Medical Center in Warren AR.
  Born Aug. 11, 1920 in Rosston AR, he was the son of the late George Clifton and Myrtle Blair Chandler. He was a United States Army veteran of World War II and was rewarded with two Bronze Stars, Good Conduct Medals, Victory Ribbons, Eastern Theater Campaign Ribbon and European-African-Middle East Theater Campaign Ribbon. He was a tank driver in the Rhineland and Northern France Campaign.
  Chandler married Alameda Savage on May 26, 1947. He was a retired carpenter with 60 years of work, a charter member of Hillside Baptist Church and a member of Saline Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Burton Chandler, Willis Chandler, Willard Chandler, L.C. Chandler, Bobby Chandler and John William Chandler; also by his sister Alice McKinney.
  Survivors include his wife Alameda Savage Chandler of Hermitage; sons Jerry Chandler of Bearden AR, Tommy Chandler of Carthage and Larry Chandler of Camden AR; daughters Phyllis Kay Davis of Junction City AR and Linda Fay Mullins of Bearden AR; brothers Harold Chandler of Memphis TN and Charles Chandler of Warren AR; sister Pauline Wade of Tyler; 15 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

  Born on April 19, 1911 in Panola County, she was the daughter of Andrew Franklin and Sarah Elizabeth Copeland Cockrell. She married Richard Benjamin Harrison on Sept. 17, 1927. He preceded her in death on Dec. 7, 1979. In 1980 she moved to Victoria moving there from Panola County. She was a member of the Methodist Church in Victoria.
  Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Don and Peggy Harrison of Conway AR; daughter Nellwyn Fern Bailey of Victoria.

  Born Jan. 28, 1899 in Gary, she was the daughter of Andrew Barkley and Mary Amanda Alexander Nutt. She attended Mt. Bethel schools and married Earl Irvin Mayfield on Sept. 9, 1917. They celebrated 62 years of marriage before his death in 1979. She was employed as a seamstress in a clothing store in the 1950's and was a member of First Baptist Church in Carthage. She was a member of the Fidelity Sunday school class and enjoyed gardening and seeing things grow. She was a devoted mother and grandmother who lived her family. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Andrew, Ozzie, Warren and Fred Nutt; sisters Mary Graves, Maude Tix and Ouida Walker; children, Millard and Michael Mayfield and her husband.
  Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Vernon and Virginia Mayfield of Houston; daughter and son-in-law Tommie Ruth and Homer Robbins of Monrovia CA; sister Zettie Duke of Lufkin; 10 grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren; and a host of friends.

  Born Oct. 21, 1907 in Rusk County, she was the daughter of William Riley and Kathrine Naomi Dove Brown. She had lived most of her life in Panola County, having lived her married life in the Delray Community. She was a homemaker, a member of the Delray Sewing Club and played the piano at church for many years. She was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Tom Ross; three sisters and two brothers.
  Survivors include her sons, Willis Neal Ross of Shreveport, Eston Royce Ross of Carthage and Dan Brown Ross of Beckville; daughter Jean Ross Williamson of Carthage; nine grandchildren; 22 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

  Born Feb. 11, 1904 in Rusk County, she was the daughter of Jesse and Mary Etta "Mollie" Garvin Brooks. She and her late husband Elzie Edwin Selman were married in 1924. Living most of her life in Panola County, she was a member of Union Arbor Baptist Church in Beckville where she attended for many years. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband; sisters Lois Stokes and Lillie Stokes; and brothers George Brooks, Rube Brooks and Steve Brooks.
  Survivors include her daughter Mary Barnett of Longview; granddaughter Diana Langley of Cupertino CA; sisters-in-law Lida Stacener of Tatum and Maggie Steffy of Longview; numerous nieces and nephews.

  Born on June 24, 1923 in Mooringsport LA, she was the daughter of W.B. and Mary Marie Roe Hensley. She served her country with the United States Navy W.R. during World War II. She married Harvey S. Summers on Oct. 3, 1946 and she owned and operated Mike's Beauty Shop for a number of years.
  She was a member of Macedonia Baptist Church and was active with the Campfire Girls and American Business Women's Association. She enjoyed dewing, working with ceramics and gardening. She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother Zack Hensley.
  Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law David and Jo Summers of Carthage and Jimmy and Patricia Summers of Waco; daughter Lynda Summer of Overton; brothers and sisters-in-law Bill, Jr. and Maria Hensley of Carthage and Charles and Bobbie Hensley of Oil City LA; sisters and brothers-in-law Barbara and Aaron Friend of Longview, Billy Jean Sandage and Mary Jo and Dee Freeman all of Lake Charles LA; six grandchildren, sever great grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

TAYLOR, Bill

  Graveside services for Bill Taylor, 60, of Carthage were held on Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, in Oddfellows Cemetery in Carthage. The Rev. Bruce Will officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Jimerson Funeral Home. He died on Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001 at his residence after a long illness.
  Born Jan. 4, 1941 in Panola County, he was a lifetime resident of Carthage. Upon receiving his associate degree in Kilgore, he then attended the University of Texas in Austin. He owned and operated Carmen's Nursery in Carthage and served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. He was a member of Rehobeth United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Eloise Taylor and his brother, Jackie Taylor.
  Survivors include his daughter and son-in-law Traci and Sunny Vandegriff of Carthage; brothers-in-law Terry Barnett of Carthage and Don and June Barnett of Longview; sisters-in-law Myrna and Tom Sullens and Nellie and Herbert Allums all of Carthage; several nieces and nephews.

HILL, Clem A

  Funeral services for Clem A. Hill, 88, of Lone Star, relative of Carthage residents Elizabeth Morris and Lori Kruebbe, were held Saturday at the Nail Haggard Funeral Home Chapel in Daingerfield. The Rev. Donnie Points officiated. Burial followed in Clark Cemetery near Lone Star under the direction of Nail Haggard Funeral Home. He died on Jan. 25, 2001 at Good Shepherd Hospital following a short illness.
  Born March 16, 1912, he was the son of Ula Mae Jones and Mart A. Hill. He had lived in New Diana, Longview and Lone Star all of his life.
  Survivors include his sister Flossie Russell of Baytown; brother J.B. Hill of New Diana; children Eugene Hill and Vickie Hill, both of Lone Star; Elizabeth Morris of Carthage, Elaine Swartzuelder of Duncanville and Darlene Handley of Memphis TN; trand daughters Lori Kruebbe of Carthage, Lana Gee and Lisa Bailey both of Houston; 10 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and many other relatives and friends.
  Hill's grandsons served as pallbearers.

CRAWFORD, Billy Jack

  Funeral services for Billy Jack Crawford, 75, of Lake Murvaul were held on Sunday at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. The Revs. Dale Reed, Larry Hutto and Jack Harris officiated. Burial followed in Waldrop Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. He died Saturday, Jan. 27, 2001 in Carthage.
  Born July 18, 1925 in Carter County, he was the son of Marvin Hall and Edna Mae Ingram Crawford. He was reared and schooled in Overton and enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served his country during World War II and completed his education. He and Beverly Lee Waldrop were united in marriage on June 9, 1950 and they celebrated more than 50 years together.
  Crawford worked as an electrician for Gulf Oil Company and Dixie Lynn Drilling Company. He was a long time member of the Brooks Chapel Baptist Church and was an avid sportsman who loved to hunt and fish when he wasn't "piddling" in his shop.
  Survivors include his wife Beverly Lee Waldrop Crawford of Lake Murvaul; son and daughter-in-law Melvin and Julie Crawford of Beckville; daughters and sons-in-law Edna and Bubba Coleman of Beckville and Diane and Danny Buck Davidson of Carthage.
  Also surviving Crawford are his grandchildren and their spouses, Denise and Eric Whisenhunt, Rusty Lynn and Nicole Coleman and Cody Crawford all of Beckville, Melissa and Jamie Brown of Clayton, Jennifer Ann Davidson of Dallas, Bradley Dan Davidson of Carthage, Brent Coleman of Farmington NM and Rebecca Ann Davidson of Nacogdoches.
  Other survivors include his great-grandchildren Jason, Amber, Ryan and Matt; special aunt Georgia Williams of Kilgore and a host of neighbors and friends.

ADAMS, Veda

  Funeral services for Veda Adams, 87, of Longview, formerly of Carthage, were held on Monday, Jan. 29, 2001, at Hawthorn Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Kenneth Nichols officiated. Burial followed in Mt. Bethel Cemetery under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. She died Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 in Longview.
  Born Sept. 13, 1913 in Gary, she was the daughter of Collie and Cora Lee McGee Wells. She was reared and completed schools in Gary. She married Thurman Ira "Dutch" Adams on June 30, 1934 and they celebrated 52 years of marriage before he preceded her in death in 1987.
  She worked as a nurse for Panola General Hospital and loved cooking, gardening and quilting. But nothing surpassed her love of her family. She was preceded in death by her brother Curtis Wells and sisters Mary Lee Kinard, Olivia Wooten, Jodi Collins and Bertha Beasley Pruitt.
  Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law Raymond "Buddy" and Sharon Adams of Longview; grand daughters and their spouses Desiree Manasco of Hallsville, Shanna and John Young of Springhill and Ashley and David McFarland of USAF Academy in Colorado Springs CO; great grandchildren Wesley and Corey Manasco, Taylor and Cameron Young and Madison McFarland; numerous nieces and newphes and a host of friends.

  Graveside services for Loraine Young Vanderwater Reed, 92, of Carthage, were held on Sunday, Jan. 28, 2001 in Restland Memorial Park near Carthage under the direction of the Lipsey Family Funeral Home. The Rev. Dr. Gary Fitzgerald officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of the Lipsey Family Funeral Home. She died on Friday, Jan. 26, 2001 at ETMC-Carthage.
  Born Dec. 13, 1904, in Longview, she was the daughter of Earnest Edwin and Hattie Palmer Vanderwater. She had lived in Carthage for 25 years, moving here from Mineola. She was of the Methodist faith and was preceded in death by her husband Mack Reed.
  Survivors include her niece, Nelda Cox of Carthage; nephews David Vanderwater of Mineola and Larry Vanderwater of Longview, numerous great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

MONK, James Roy

  Funeral services for James Roy Monk, 63, of San Antonio, formerly of Carthage, were held recently at the Church of Reconciliation. The Rev. Craig MacColl, rector, officiated. Burial followed in Mission Burial Park North. He died Jan. 22, 2001 following a brief illness.
  Born on May 8, 1937 in Lubbock, he was the son of the late Roy M. Monk and Katherine Monk of Carthage. He was a 1955 graduate of Carthage High School and attended Panola College. He was a 1959 graduate of Texas A&M University and received his MA from Stephen F. Austin State University.
  Following graduation, he taught at LaMarque High School for several years and then worked for the Job Corps while stationed at Mountain Home, Idaho. He later served with the Navy Civilian Human Resources for more than 30 years in Zion, IL; Harrisburg PA, and Kingsville TX and San Antonio where he had been since 1983. He had been a member of the Chordsmen, the Texas Bach Choir and the choir at the Episcopal Church of Reconciliation.
  Survivors include his wife Ann Smith Monk of San Antonio; daughter and son-in-law Patti and Brad Hagberg of St. Louis MO; stepsons Anthony Smith and his wife Michelle of Round Rock and Matthew Smith of San Antonio; grandchildren Braden Hagberg, Kyle and Kathryn Smith and Giovanna Smith; sister and brother-in-law Marilyn and Bob Phillips of Carthage; niece Adina Stewart of Carthage and nephew Louis Zanolli of Nacogdoches.

GOSS, Rev J R

  Funeral services for the Rev. J.R. Goss, 64, of Tenaha and formerly of Panola County, were held at 11 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at First Baptist Church in Tenaha. The Revs. Dr. Bill Homes, Bishop Marshall Gilmore, Robert Gipson, James Roberts, Illinois Francis, James Sims, Earl Roberts, James Wall Sr., and Elder Johnny Wilson officiated.
  Burial followed in Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Panola County under the direction of Jenkins-Garmon Funeral Home of Henderson. The Rev. Goss died Tuesday, Jan. 9, 2001, at Shelby Regional Medical Center in Center after sustaining injuries in an electrical accident.
  Born July 28, 1936 in Panola County, he was the son of the late Elijah and Evelyn Jelks Goss. He was the business owner of Granddaddy Construction Company in Tenaha and had worked for Brown & Root, H.B. Zachary and others before starting his own company. He served as Sunday School teacher, Sunday School superintendent and church treasurer and later, after 1984, he pastured East Legion CME church and Mt. Olive CME Church.
  The Rev. Goss also served on the Pleasant Hill Cemetery Committee as the present chairman. He married Lillie Jean Greer on May 30, 1967 in Shelby County. They celebrated more than 33 years of marriage. He was preceded in death by his sister Beulah Goss Turner.
  Survivors include his wife Lillie Jean (Greer) Goss of Tenaha; son and daughter-in-law Michael and Wanda Goss of Houston; daughters and son-in-law Cecelia and Foster Robinson of Overland Park KS; Bridget Goss, Beryl Goss and Barbara Gale Pickett all of Los Angeles; sisters and brothers-in-law Mary and Benjamin Brown of Altadena CA; Bobbie Goss and Verneva and Charles White all of Marshall.
  Also surviving the Rev. Goss are his brothers and sisters-in-law the Rev. William and Carol Goss of Calipatri CA, Joseph and Mary Goss of Fontana CA, Lonnie Ray (twin brother) and Geneva Goss and the Rev. Elijah and Valorie Goss all of Los Angeles, Daniel and Yvonne Goss of Marshall and Samuel and LaVern Goss of Avinger; uncle David Chatman of Los Angeles and special aunt Pearl McGee of Carthage.
  Other survivors include his grandchildren Courtney Goss, Jonathan Goss, Ashley Howell, James David Howell, Trina Howell, Mark Richardson, Kytaylaure Richardson, Aluyon Richardson, Melvin Goodwin and Nikki Goodwin; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and the church family of Mt. Olive CME Church in Garrison.

BOYD, Joe Lafayette

  Funeral services for Joe Lafayette Boyd, 89, of Carthage, were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001 at The Lipsey Family Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Dr. J.B. Morris officiated. Burial followed in Walton Cemetery under the direction of The Lipsey Family Funeral Home. He died Wednesday, Jan. 10, 2001, at Good Shepherd Medical Center in Longview.
  Born July 2, 1911 in Panola County, he was the son of Madison Lafayette and Aubie Pace Boyd. A lifelong resident of Panola County, he was a retired rural mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, with more than 30 years of service.
  Boyd was a member of the International Order of the Oddfellows Gaiety Lodge #84 of Carthage, National Association of Retired Veterans, serving in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1940-1946, being involved in al major battles in the Pacific Theater except for one. He served on the U.S.S. Portland CA-33 and was a cattleman and farmer. He was a member of Ebenezer United Methodist Church and married Vena Lee Copeland on June 1944 in Tenaha.
  Survivors include his wife, Vena Copeland Boyd of Carthage; son and daughter-in-law Tony and Tricia Boyd of Sugar Land; daughters and sons-in-law Judy and David Bazer of Doyline LA and Wanda and Billy Reagan of North Richland Hills; brother Oren Boyd of Carthage; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
  Pallbearers were James Ashby, Travis Wall, Robert Bazer, Matt Bazer and Joey Reagan.
  The family suggests that memorials be made to Walton Cemetery Association or to Ebenezer United Methodist Church Memorial Fund.

MABE, David

  Graveside services for David Mabe, 76, of Beeville, formerly of Carthage, were held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 13, in Bethlehem Cemetery in Panola County. The Rev. Freddy Mason officiated. Arrangements were under the direction of Hawthorn Funeral Home. He died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2001 in Beeville.
  Born June 4, 1924 in Gause, he was the son of Oscar and Julia Gertrude Rains Mabe. After graduating from high school, he went into the service. He served with the United States Army Air Force during World War II and married Edith Marshall on Sept. 27, 1944. They celebrated 40 years of marriage before her death in 1984.
  Mabe was employed as a gauger with Exxon for 35 years before his retirement. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Sinton, the Masonic Blue Lodge #1012 in Sinton, a 32nd degree Mason and the Order of the Eastern Star Sinton Chapter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and his dog Butch. He was also preceded in death by his brother Clifford Mabe.
  Survivors include his son and daughter-in-law Ronny and Barbara Mabe of Pettus; daughter Sandra Johnson of Houston; grandchild and their spouses Jennifer and Bill Fox of Bryan, Jason and Loretta Mabe of Cestahowa, Eric and Jill Curry of Houston and Travis Tyler; great-grandchildren Sydney Fox, Taylor Mabe and Megan Mabe; numerous local nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
