1884 is the date when a deed was recorded for land for a school at Alpine. The deed reads,"I, W.P. Pope ... in consideration of the interest that I feel as a citizen of said county in the education of the children of my community, donate ... unto T. E. Boren, County Judge ... for school purposes a part of the Matthew Parker HR, on the waters of Murvaul Bayou, a tributary of the Sabine River, 7 miles west from Carthage ... containing one acre of land."
