Antioch School

A land deed dated January 25, 1887, begins the story of Antioch School. Thomas Williamson and his wife, Jennie, granted to Judge J.H. Long one acres of land "in trust for the school community". The deed called the School Community District #29, but that number was changed later when schools were reorganized.

Commissioners Court Records show that Antioch School District #37 was created (or re-created) in May 1909. The Court Minutes record the exact lines of the district, which were spelled out, perhaps, for the first time.

The County Board rating in 1912 was Intermediate School (seven grades), but later in the year on June 1912, the County Board re-classified it to a two-year high school and thus it continued to be the next year.

Antioch continued as a rural school sending high school students to graduate at Carthage until it became consolidated with Carthage in the late 1940's.
