Byfield Common School District was creamed on December 6, 1907. When the reorganization of schools was made in the next few years, Byfield was rated by the County Board as an Intermediate School.

On June 1, 1912, the County Board re-classified it as a two year high school, 2nd class.

In one more year, 1913, the school was re-classified by the Board to a three year high school, 1st class.

Supt. Holmes's report in 1912 showed that the patrons were making changes. "Byfield has a tax voted, the house repaired and furniture has been added. The school is the pride of the community."

In the consolidation movement in the 1940's, Byfield consolidated with Carthage Independent School District.

Note: The Byfield Community was located around the intersection of present day highways FM 999 and FM 1971. Out of sight near that intersection is an abandoned cemetery known as the Byfield Cemetery or the Redwine Cemetery.
