J. M. 'Jake' Harrell

From the June 23, 2006 issue of the Terrell County News-Leader, page 2:

ABILENE - Funeral services were yesterday here for J. M. "Jake" Harrell, 77, of Abilene, a native of Sanderson and longtime high school football coach who died Monday, June 19, 2006. He was the brother of Jack Harrell of Sanderson.

Harrell was born in Sanderson on May 6, 1929, to Frank and Babe Harrell and lettered in football for four years at Sanderson High School before graduating in 1946.

He was a classmate of several Sanderson residents including former County Judge Dudley Harrison, Doris Cooke Harrison, Doris McSparran Tollett, Jim Davis and Earline Cox Thompson.

Harrell attended Sul Ross State University on a football scholarship and lettered all four years before graduating in 1950. He was a member of the Sul Ross Hall of Honor.

He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Helen Garner and two brothers, Aubrey Harrell and Frank Harrell.

He is survived by his wife, Emily, and three children, Tommy and Karen Harrell of Midland, Dixie and Dave Kellum of Humble and Sam and Kathy Harrell of Ennis.
