JAMES C. EDWARDS was born Abt. 1816 in possibly Giles County,Tennessee, and died 1850 in Bastrop County, Texas. He married Sarah Smith Abt. 1836 in possibly Tennessee. She was born Abt. 1816 in possibly Giles County, Tennessee, and died June 1852 in Bastrop County, Texas.

Fann Hodge, daughter to A. H. Edwards by his third wife, stated in a newspaper article that his mother and father were Sallie Smith and Robert Edwards of Bastrop. However, a James C. Edwards and his wife, Sarah, left their estate to A. H. and his three sisters upon their death. Census reports of A.H. and his sisters show their father to have been from England. A. H. is listed in the census record of Burnet County, Texas as born in Tennessee. A. H. was raised by John Harvey and his second wife, Sina Barton, in Burnet County. Notes for ALMUS HAVINGTON EDWARDS:

  • A.H. was raised by John Harvey and wife, Sina Barton Harvey from 1852. John Harvey was a pioneer surveyor in the State of Texas and his stories are told in history books.
  • A.H. was working a roundup to drive cattle North.. They found a cow and calf that A.H. said belonged to a rancher whose place was north of his place. The boss said he didn't care and to brand the strays as theirs. A.H. quit the roundup.
  • Next year, he didn't go on the maverick roundup and his calves were branded. He was angered when he saw the calves sucking on his branded cows.
  • The following year A.H. went on roundup a few weeks earlier and against Sina Barton Harvey's wishes, he branded all the calves that would have been branded. Sina was afraid this would cause a killing. She partially dis-inherited A.H. of some property that he was going to receive from the Harveys... information from Gary Edwards
  • A.H. had two horses he liked... kept bells on them when he turned them out to graze so he could hear where they were... the Indians put mud in the bells to quiet them and stole the horses... He then got a Jenny and cropped off the tail and mane. The Indians were superstitous and wouldn't bother the Jenny... W. Vernon Farmer, uncle of Gary Edwards on his mother's side.
  • Another story: Sina left the granite mountain to A.H. He could not use a rock mountain so traded it for a team of oxen...Gary Edwards.
