HOWE CEMETERY, COLEMAN COUNTY, TEXAS

The Howe Cemetery is located on private property.  To reach it, go about 11 miles northeast of Coleman on State highway 206, then turn right (east) on FM 585.  Go about four and one-half miles.  The cemetery is about one-quarter mile south in a pasture.

In 1907, David William Howe deeded to the Howe community one and one-half acres at the north base of a hill for public burial with the provision that the community "put a good wire fence with cedar posts around the land and keep it in good repair" (Coleman County deed records - Volume 65, page 35).

The cemetery is well kept and fenced.  The original size of one and one-half acres is still fenced, with a rock lined road leading from the old gate.  However, in recent years, the area where all the graves are located was fenced with a chain link fence, making maintenance easier.  It has been kept up for many years by Arthur (now deceased) and Ruby Watters.  We wish to thank Ruby Watters for her help in recording this cemetery.  Reading began in the northwest corner and was read in a snake like fashion, ending at one row and beginning at that point on the next row.  Some family plots may have been separated by this process.
