WHITE CHAPEL CEMETERY, COLEMAN COUNTY, TEXAS

The inscriptions for the Coleman Cemetery were originally recorded and up to date as of April 5, 1988.

To reach the White Chapel Cemetery, go about six miles west of Coleman on FM 53, turn right (north) on FM 503.  The cemetery will be on the left (west) side of the road just over 2 miles.  The White Chapel Baptist Church is again serving the area, and the cemetery is located just north of it.

The cemetery is fenced and well kept.  Shortly after the cemetery was first read, the south fence was moved back to take in more land.  There is a gate on the road side of the cemetery, with a road dividing the cemetery.  We have called the section to the left (south), Section A, and the section to the right (north), Section B.  The south extention is not in use at this time.  There are probably many unknown graves, especially in the southwest corner.

This cemetery has been in use by the White Chapel Community since the early 1880's, but no deed was made until Jan 7, 1952, when the trustees of the Centennial Rural High School District, " ... conveyed to the trustees of a public cemetery, to be known as White Chapel Cemetery, a tract of 2.88 acres, which lay along the north line of a tract of 2 acres conveyed to the trustees of the White Chapel Baptist Church.  This land having been abandoned by Coleman County and the school trustees many years ago and not needed or claimed for school purposes and the same having been used for many years as a cemetery."  (Coleman County deeds - Vol. 313, page 592)

This cemetery was read in the usual snake fashion from row to row.  Many of the rows do not end or begin on the fence line, but various distances from them.
