William Joseph Casey was
born in North Carolina, December 3, 1839,
and went to Tennessee, during the Civil
War to serve in the Confederate Army under
General Johnston and was wounded at
Perryville, Kentucky. In 1863, he
married Lucy T. Holt of Virginia.
They had nine children, seven sons and two
daughters. He moved with his family
to Texas in 1876, settling near Arlington,
where in March, 1884, his wife died, and
four days later, his infant son, Alonzo,
died. They were laid to rest at
Johnson Station, near Arlington.
William J. and his family came to Coleman
County in 1888 and bought 189 acres on the
old Coleman-Comanche road, 2½ miles from
the Brown County line. He lived
there until all his children were grown
and away from home, and sold the farm to
William Cap Casey, as is still owned by
several of his children. W. J. died in
1932. His children were:
(1) Shepherd,
born June 23, 1865. He settled in
New Mexico, married Alice ?, had four boys
and one girl.
(2) J. Fox, May
10, 1867-1943, settled nearer Coleman with
his wife, Mabel Roquemore, daughter of
Henry C. Roquemore (see Roquemore). They
had one son, Jack, whose grandchildren
still own the land.
(3) Kit, February
13, 1869 - April 23, 1954. He and
his wife, Ada Lowe, (November 9,
1868-March 3, 1950, daughter of M. S.
(1842 - 1928) and Mary E. (Culpepper) Lowe
(1849 - 1922). (See Robert Martin
Lowe). His place is still owned by
some of his children, who were: Mrs.
Bernice (Casey) Herring (see George O.
Herring); Mrs. Rubye (Casey) Dean (see
Albert H. Dean), had two boys and two
daughters; Miss Rubye Thelma Casey; Mrs.
Lerlee (Casey) Sheffield, had one son and
one daughter; Mrs. Ouida (Casey) Peters;
Arthur Casey, married Faye McNutt and, had
one daughter; and Wade Casey.
(4) Anna,
December 13, 1870-1951, married John Fry
and lived in Duncan, Oklahoma. They
had four boys and four girls.
(5) William Cap
"W. C.," April 7, 1873-1944, married Mary
McCulloch, who lived on the Brown County
line, in 1901. Their children were:
Verda Vada (1901), married John Clyde
Brown (see Alfred Earl (Abb) Brown), had
one daughter; William Quilla (1902), had
one son and one daughter; Audria Cea
(1903), had several step-children (see J.
W. Slayton); Erwin Zea (1906) (see Erwin
Zea Casey); Willard Hershal "Pat" (1909),
had one son, and lola Faye (1913), married
Dee Bouchillon (see Robert Newton
Bouchillon). Audria, Erwin, and lola
now live in Coleman. Verda was
Salutatorian in 1921; honored in 1967 as
Ex-Student of Santa Anna High of the year.
(6) Van, April
29, 1875-1952, married Florence Story (see
Robert Newton Story).
(7) Prairie Bird,
June 16, 1877 - 1962, married a Simmons,
and moved to California with their two
daughters.
(8) Texas, June
16, 1880-1949, lived in New Mexico.
(9) Alonzo, March
13, 1884-March 16, 1884.
