Mills Park Coleman, Texas Legal Description: |
| It
is not known when the Coleman Colored Park was first
established. The 1948 map, and earlier maps, of
this area of Coleman show the park as a vacant lot on
the east side of the drainage ditch running through the
area. ...................................................................
"In June 1957, a recreation building was moved into the south part of the Coleman Colored Park. Youngsters regularly enjoyed the playground equipment. The Colored Park was well equipped and received heavy use, and was well maintained, often by volunteer help. The park was later named Mills Park, to honor Ed Mills, who was the volunteer caretaker of the park. It was located in the east part of Coleman, bounded by East Second, Brazos, East Third and San Marcos Streets. In 1967, improvements were made at the park with a large area paved, with basketball goals erected, and backstops built so the area also served as a double tennis court. Playground and picnic facilities were located there at the time. Today the park is still in use." (updated from "Looking Backwards, 1940-1980," conpiled by Ralph Terry.)
