This is an old reading done in the 1970's . We hope
to have an update for this in the near future.
Thanks to Nancy Faulk White Adams for
the pictures and updates!
Thanks to Jane Eubanks, Maretta Burnett De
Lesdernier, & Tom Mitchell for their
pictures.
UPDATE:
Thanks to Geraldine Little Braswell &
Sandy Spann for photographing the entire cemetery
Oct. 2008 for us to post online.
There are MANY gravesites marked with rocks
and unreadable funeral home markers
John Daniel "Tobe" Davis
gave the land for the Grice Cemetery,
his name first appears on a deed dated
1895; however, the first burial was the
daughter of P K & Joanne Williams in
1864. Since other tombstone "rocks" are
in that area, there could have been
other burials during that same period.
The cemetery is now called Grice
Cemetery; however it was originally
called Hamil's Chapel Graveyard. This
information via Milton Dacus, Grice
researcher. (See above link for the
Grice History by Milton Dacus) It was
also published in the Gilmer Mirror in
1968, then Donna Kouba wrote an updated
article referring to Milton's
information in the book "Country Faith
and Fate....Churches and Cemeteries of
East Texas" (Thanks to Sheila Poole for this
information)

submitted by Sheila Pool - Per Ronald
Wade John
Daniel "Tobe" Davis, born in Alabama the
son of Joseph Greer Davis (born 1824
SC) and Amey Anna "Ann" Evers Davis (born
1832 Ga.). He married Ada Florence McGinty Davis
(1859-1930) on 6
Feb 1879 in Yazoo Co., Miss. and their
children included Annie Elizabeth Davis (1880 – 1902) and
Joseph Davis born about
1889.
John Daniel
"Tobe" Davis gave the land for the Grice
Cemetery, his name first appears on a deed
dated 1895; however, the first burial was
the daughter of P. K. & Joanne Williams
in 1864. Since other tombstone
"rocks" are in that area, there could have
been other burials during that same period.
The cemetery is now called Grice Cemetery;
however it was originally called Hamil's
Chapel Graveyard. This
information via Milton Dacus, Grice
researcher.

On stone with Oma Brice - Per
Ronald
Wade - Margaret
A. "Mag" Lyle, born in Georgia, at the
time of the 1900 census she was married to Elihu
A. Cam Lyle (1849 Ga. -1902 Upshur Co., buried
Gilmer Old Cem., Upshur Co., Tx.) She was
the mother of Neoma B. "Oma" Martin Brice
(1878-1958). She
appears to have been married previously as her
daughter Neoma is shown on the 1900 census as
the "step-daughter" of Elihu Lyle as well as not
shown on his 1880 census listings. |
Probably more than 150 unmarked graves also.
