List
of Members of the Texas State MilitiaThe information on this page is a portion of the Don Roberts Collection donated to this site by the Wood County Genealogical Society. Questions or comments about this page should be directed to the society.
All the records reproduced here were originally transcribed by Mr. Don Roberts. Mr. Roberts apparently tried to preserve the appearance of the original documents as well as he could with typewritten transcription. We have, in turn, attempted to preserve Mr. Roberts' organization and appearance.
The records are:
A few paragraphs of Mr. Roberts' Introduction will better explain the records.
IMPORTANT NOTICE: We wish to call your attention to the fact that in transcribing these pages from a photostat or Xerox copy of the original in the State Archives at Austin that they are all handwritten in the old style in common use during the 1860's. It is hard to distinguish an L from a T or a J. The old style writing used what looks like our letter "p" for a double "s" or "ss." Numerous times in initials or names the writer tries to make his correction, not by crossing out his error and starting anew, but attempts to correct his error by writing over his first mistaken letter or word, which makes it more confusing. Those of us that are used to the old deed records in Wood County grew used to the spencerian handwriting of A. Fitzgerald (our first County Clerk) and others, but when we go into another county we sometimes find it hard to translate some of the words of other county clerks or their deputies of that period.
So, we ask that in case you run across the name of some person in these pages that you are familiar with and we have made an error in either the initial or the name, or even the enrolling officer may have made the error, we ask that you call it to our attention so that we may correct our list.
Also, please remember that this list is only for those enrolling from Wood, VanZandt and Smith County, whereas many Civil War Veterans moved to East Texas after the war ended and their enrollment will be in the County and State from which they came, thus will not show on this list.
Under the Confederate Veterans Act of April 9th, 1881 there was allotted a total of 1,970,936 acres of the Texas Public Domain. Disabled veterans of Confederate Service were awarded 1280 acres each, unless he possessed an estate worth $1000.In Vol. A of the Commissioners Court Records of Wood County we find a number of applications for Land Certificates under an act entitled "An act granting to persons who have been permanently disabled by reason of wounds received while in the service of this State, or of the Confederate States, a land certificate for 1280 acres of land." Approved April 9th, 1881.
While these applications were made to and acted upon by the Commissioners Court of Wood County, such lands were to be chosen from unlocated lands, and we have no way of knowing whether or not any of the applications acted upon resulted in the issuance of a certificate to the applicants, nor on what counties such certificates were to be located.
